Pat Bradley benefit Aug. 3 in Wakefield - The Boston Globe (Boston, MA)

If you've always wanted to test your golf mettle against thebest of the best, you have your chance Aug. 3 when LPGA Hall of FamerPat Bradley of Westford hosts her annual benefit tournament atColonial Country Club in Wakefield.

Proceeds benefit the Thyroid Foundation of America.

Bradley developed Graves Disease in 1986 and, until it wasfinally diagnosed and treated, it had a devastating effect on hergame. Since then, she has regained her touch and last year wasinducted into the LPGA Hall of Fame.

Bradley will play the par-3 fifth hole with each foursome, andan automobile will be presented to the first golfer acing the hole.Prizes will also be awarded for the longest drive, closest to the pinand top team.

Winchester resident and Burlington policeman Bill Maggio tookit on the chin recently when he boxed Muscovite Ylia Andreev in anInternational Challenge hosted by the Denver Police. The bout wasstopped in the third round after Maggio was knocked down for thethird time.

Maggio, 34, acknowledged he was 'fighting for survival' againstAndreev, a 20-year-old member of the Moscow PD. Andreev had 3-inchheight and 8-inch reach advantages. Both weighed in at 165 pounds.

Twenty seconds into the fight, Andreev hit Maggio with threeleft jabs and an overhand right, which nearly knocked him through theropes. 'The jab was harder than most straight right hands I've facedaround here,' said Maggio. 'He was incredibly powerful.'

After the fight, which Maggio used as a tuneup for next month'sInternational Police Olympics in Washington, he was invited to theRussian's hotel suite, where Andreev presented him with his fullmilitary dress uniform.Russian basketball coming to Methuen

Speaking of Russians, three basketball teams from Cherepovezwill be coming to Methuen Friday to play games against the boys andgirls high school varsity teams and an all-star game against an areamen's team.

The games were originally scheduled to be played June 29, buttransportation problems caused the postponement, according to Methuengirls coach Mimi Hyde-Stott, who is organizing the internationalchallenge.

The games will be played at Methuen High. Tickets, $4 foradults, $2 for seniors and children, and $10 for a family of four,are available at the high school's athletic office or any of themiddle schools.Olympic trainer's job for Winchester native

He won't be competing, but Winchester's Rick Zappala will be apretty important part of the US Olympic effort this month inBarcelona. Zappala will be a member of the medical staff, assignedto the boxing, tae kwon do and modern pentathlon teams.

His involvement in the Olympic program began in 1989 as avolunteer athletic trainer at the US training center in ColoradoSprings. He has worked the Olympic Festivals in Minneapolis and LosAngeles.

Zappala graduated from Boston College in 1978 and was a graduateassistant athletic trainer at Central Connecticut in 1978 and 1979.After receiving his master's degree in science at Central Connecticutin 1980, he was named head trainer at American University inWashington and served there two years. Since 1982, he has been headtrainer at Hofstra University.Here and there . . .

Burlington catcher and captain Dennis Doble is headed forHarvard. He hit .342 with 24 runs batted in, two homeruns, and sixdoubles this spring and displayed a rifle arm. He also playedbasketball and captained the football team. To boot, he graduatedwith a 3.75 grade point average . . . Amy Daniels of Andover wasnamed the top female athlete at Governor Dummer Academy. Daniels,who'll attend Lafayette College, excelled in soccer, volleyball andlacrosse.
