Medford's Moreno a UMass-Boston hit - The Boston Globe (Boston, MA)

Freshman wide receiver/punter Mike Moreno of Medford has been oneof the biggest surprises in an otherwise dismal season for theUniversity of Massachusetts at Boston football team.

In the team's first four games (1-3), Moreno, who earned threeletters and captained Medford last year, has averaged 34.7 yards on30 punts, five of which have been downed inside the 20-yard line. Onseveral occasions, he turned a bad snap into a positive play, and,against Bridgewater State, he boomed a school record 69-yarder. He'salso had a 67-yarder against Mass. Maritime and a 64-yarder againstWorcester State. Those three punts rank 1-2-3 in the school's recordbook.

Against Mass. Maritime, he punted five times for a 41.6-yardaverage, a single game school record.

Offensively, Moreno has caught six passes for 88 yards. Four ofthem for 63 yards came against Worcester.Medford's Sluz picks powerhouse Bentley

Two-time Boston Globe all-scholastic Alyssa Sluz of Medford willbe playing her college basketball at Bentley this winter. Sluz, asix-footer, averaged 18 points, 16 rebounds and five blocked shotsher senior year at Medford.

Once again, Bentley is expected to be a national power. It hasreached the NCAA Division 2 Final Four five straight years.

College Sports magazine pre-season ranked Bentley second in thecountry behind defending national champion North Dakota State. Thecoaches poll, in its NCAA Basketball Preview magazine, had Bentleyfifth, behind North Dakota, North Dakota State, Washburn (Kan.) andCal Poly-Pomona.

The NCAA publication also mentioned Darlene Orlando-Ciarcia ofthe University of Masachusetts at Lowell as a New England 'player towatch.'Framingham State has big area group

Two NorthWest area athletes are serving as captains of footballand soccer this fall at Framingham State College.

Rodd Patten of Medford, 5-10, 155-pound wide receiver, heads thefootball team while midfielder/fullback Brian Linnehan of Tewksburyleads the soccer team. Both are seniors.

Framingham State's fall rosters list several other areaathletes.

Robyn Roberts of Medford, Amy Murray of North Reading and MaryBeaulieu of Tewksbury are members of the women's soccer team; ChadBrown of Arlington, Jason Tombend of Concord, Karl Troup of Acton andPatten play football; Amy Mangold of Billerica, Kristie Barrett ofBurlington and Amy Cail play field hockey, and Jason Haroutunian ofBillerica, David Marley of Lawrence and Sherri Beck of Billerica runcross-country.Patsy Sullivan joins UVM Hall of Fame

Patsy Sullivan of Chelmsford, the only swimmer ever to earnAll-America honors at the University of Vermont, was recentlyinducted into the school's Athletic Hall of Fame.

She earned All-America honors at the 1981 Division 2 nationalchampionships by virtue of a sixth place finish in the 1,500freestyle and eighth in the 400-yard individual medley. In the NewEnglands earlier that year, she won four events.

While at Vermont, Sullivan set 12 individual records. Half ofthem stand today, including the 400, 500, 800, 1,000 and 1,650freestyle and 400 individual medley.Here and there ...
